Pathology on the Hare Checklist
Ever wonder how one can really test a real psychopath? Well the answer is pretty simple, researcher use a thing called the Hare Psychopathy Checklist. This basically measures traits such as the inability to feel empathy or remorse, pathological lying, or impulsivity. The Hare Psychopathy Checklist is a tool that diagnoses the rate of a person’s behaviors that that lead to psychopathic and antisocial tendencies. This is also known as the PCL-R. This whole checklist was initially started to test people accused and convicted of crime. This scale involves a symptom rating, which qualified examiners use to compare one’s level of psychopathy with one of a “prototypical psychopath”. It is one of the best methods to use in this field. This whole technique is often used on adult males in prison, criminals in psychiatric hospitals, and can also be effective to diagnose sex offenders, females and adolescents.
Dr. Kent Kiehl, one of the world's leading investigators of psychopathy and a professor at the University of New Mexico, explains "The scores range from zero to 40, the average person in the community, a male, will score about 4 or 5. Your average inmate will score about 22. An individual with psychopathy is typically described as 30 or above.” This goes to show how different these sociopaths really are.
An example of a psychopath following the hare psychopathy checklist is the studies on a psychopath named Brian Dugan. Examiners found that this man psychopath scored a 38.5, which is evidently a very high number. A man sentenced for two life sentences due to rape and murder. He was charged was guilty for the horrible things he had done to a young little girl. These test prove who real psychopaths really are, with simple formulas and testing. His intentions to rob a house turned into a brutal murder, he even stated: "I turned into Mr. Hyde from Dr. Jekyll."
No one would ever know that this man had a bad side to him; he had a great IQ and seemed far from unintelligent, but as said before, psychopath share these qualities. Some may even say that they feel remorse, but Kent Kiehl says that he has heard all of these excuses and statements before, but they only do this to help their own case.
